Your 2015 Small Business SoMe Checklist

KEWe get it; your business is your baby. You want it to grow and be successful, but like a lot of parents, you’re not exactly sure which strategy will get you there. In theory, social media marketing is simple, right? Even your grandma is using Facebook. However, the reality of running an effective social media marketing campaign has smacked more than a few small business owners in the face.

We know that especially for small business owners, hiring a firm to handle social media isn’t always feasible, but at KreativElement we’re about more than peddling services; we offer some pretty fantastic information and training. Be Consistent

Consistency is first on the list for a very good reason –this is where most business owners who choose to go it on their own will fail immediately. They’ll shoot out the gates with guns uh blazin’, annoy the small amount of followers they have had, then fall of the face of internet for six months.

A good rule of thumb is to post on each social outlet no less than three times/week and no more than 5 times/week. This consistency keeps your brand in front of your audience on a regular basis, without alienating them. Click here for more on posting consistency and scheduling.

Throw in Some Curve Balls

While the end goal is to achieve bottom line, financial impacts through sales and visibility, it’s important to offer a good balance of information, sales and engagement. When every post is aimed at sales, you will turn your audience off very quickly. While it’s proven that the vast majority of social media users don’t mind being sold to on SoMe, that’s not why they created a profile. Ask yourself; What do I share? What do I like? Why do I follow? Then do that, even if it has nothing to do with your industry. It’s about getting your name, brand and logo in front of more people.

Repurpose Your Content

Content doesn’t grow on trees, so be sure to recycle it. When you write a blog post it can be turned into a checklist, an email blast, an ebook, a SlideShare presentation or multiple social media posts. Engage

With all of these great SoMe publishing services, it is very appealing to schedule your posts and go on auto-pilot. You’re doing yourself and your business a disservice by neglecting to engage with your audience. Use CTAs

That’s marketing speak for Call to Action. The idea behind adding CTAs to your blog post is to directly request the desired action from your audience. Guess what –they work! When you ask a follower to “Please Like”, “Please Share” or to “Please Comment”, those specifically requested actions are more likely to happen. Want to know more about effectively using CTAs? Create a Process

Use publishing services like HootSuite, Buffer or Sprout Social to schedule your posts in bulk on a weekly basis. These tools make it easier for busy business owners to set just 30 minutes aside each week to schedule their posts, but again, don’t forget about daily engagement. These services will also usually offer some pretty great analytics so you can continuously improve your process and content.

Unfollowing is Important Too

Did you get on Twitter, realize how it works and go on a following binge? Yeah, we’ve all been there. Following people in bulk is fine, but you have to do some maintenance. If you follow in bulk, about two weeks later you need to then unfollow those who have not followed you back. Twitter has a set ratio of followers to follows, so following 1,234 people if you only have 12 followers, is not good. To decrease this maintenance step, be sure you’re targeting relevant Tweeps. Incorporate Images

We actually make it a goal to use images for just about every single social media post we generate. Images not only increase engagement; your audience processes messages with images faster than text alone. Most people are aware of how important images are in posts, but they don’t know where to get all the images. Buffer has you covered with a lot of image generation ideas that we even use here at KE.
