As a business, your website is your face to the world. It’s often a customer’s first impression of your business, meaning how it looks and performs can help them form either a positive or negative impression of your business. If you’re looking to make a positive impression (isn’t everyone?), avoid these common web design mistakes that we see all too often.
Lack of white space
White space is a good thing. Honestly, without it your website would likely be a chaotic mess. It improves legibility, allows you to draw attention to important parts on the page, and gives the user room to breathe. In our opinion, one of the best ways to utilize white space is to highlight your CTAs better. And if all of those reasons weren’t enough to convince you, white space gives your website a clean, professional look.
Not using consistent branding
Of all the web design mistakes we’re covering today, this is the most common one we’ve seen and quite possibly the most frustrating. Consistent branding is necessary for any company on- or offline. Mixing seven different fonts in an array of colors that couldn’t all be found in a 24-pack of crayons is probably going to give your users a headache.
Focus on having a max of three fonts with no more than one script font. As for the colors, many brands choose a complementary color palette consisting of 3-8 colors. Having a uniform design will ensure your site is legible, professional, and pleasing to the eye.
No search function
Plain and simple, users will leave your site if they don’t find what they expect. And they aren’t always the most patient in their search for that information. That’s why giving your users the option to search for the information they need is beneficial for both you and them. It increases their satisfaction and your bounce rate (and maybe even sales!). Offering a user-friendly site with simple navigation can make a world of difference.
Having too many ads
No one, and we mean literally no one, wants to be bombarded by ads when they visit a website. Ads on your website is clutter akin to all the unopened mail that accumulates on the table closest to your front door. They’re an annoyance and can cause your users to have a negative experience. Keeping your site clear of this type of clutter will give your website a (you guessed it) clean, professional appearance.
