Three Part Series: The 3 Game Changers of Your 2015 Online Presence

Yup, we know, keeping up with the ever-changing best practices, tools and tricks of keeping your online presence relevant and effective can be overwhelming. That’s what we’re here for! You’re blogging, tweeting and updating your website regularly and that’s great, but these three game changers of 2015 could really boost your reach and influence online with a little action. That being said, inaction could also be a big problem, as losing traction and ranking is a real possibility.  The good news -not every tool or bit of information will be relevant to your industry or business model, but there’s something in here for everyone, like the first on the list…dun, dun, dun…Mobilegeddon!



We’re constantly hearing about small changes and tweaks to the Google algorithm and making small pivots to keep up, but this latest change was big -big enough to be called “Mobilegeddon”. As smartphones and devices rise in popularity and the cost of this technology continues to decrease, more people are searching on their mobile devices, making mobile-friendly sites an essential of any business’ online presence.


According to, 4 out of 5 consumers use smartphones to shop, and 52% of Americans user their devices while browsing in-store in order to research the product online. So, Google in all its wisdom made a big change and put a lot of weight on whether or not a site is mobile. Meaning websites that are not mobile-friendly, are going to lose some traction in their organic traffic.


According to a VentureBeat study of Hubspot customers, companies who weren’t ready for Mobilegeddon lost about 5% of their organic traffic over the first three weeks, and it is proven that the longer you wait to get mobile-friendly, the harder is to regain that lost traction in your search rank.


So, what do I need to do?

First things first, you may not have anything to worry about, as your site may already meet all of the requirements, which are as follows:


  • Do not use software that is not common on mobile devices, such as Flash.
  • Do not use small or hard to read text. If visitors have to zoom, that’s no bueno.
  • Be sure your site sizes content to fit the screen so users don’t have to scroll horizontally or zoom. Vertical scrolling is all good.
  • Give your links some room. Be sure your links can be easily tapped, and that visitors don’t have to zoom in order to use links.


Another pretty simple way to find out if you’ve made the cut is to run a free mobile-friendly test on your website. All you have to do is visit this site, enter your URL, and Google will immediately let you know if you’re in the clear. If you don’t happen to pass, there is also a Mobile Usability Report that will analyze your site and let you know where your shortcomings are.


Morale of the story -companies need mobile friendly sites, and they need them yesterday, actually, as of April 21st 2015. Until pretty recently, many companies had separate sites just for mobile visitors -that won’t cut the mustard folks. Your main site has to be mobile-friendly to pass the test.
